The SC, which stands for “Sport Coupe,” first entered the market in 1991. The grand tourer was manufactured by Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus until its discontinuation in 2010.

During its stay on the market, only two generations were released by the Japanese carmaker. The second and final generation was released in 2001.

Despite having only two generations in nearly two decades, the second generation did receive a facelift in 2005, which helped refresh the model.

Lexus often aimed to compete with the likes of other big names in the luxury car industry. For the SC, this meant that it would face rivals like the Mercedes-Benz CLK, Cadillac Eldorado, BMW 8-Series, and Buick Riviera.

As with a number of Lexus models, the SC came in a number of grades based on its powertrain. These were the SC 300 and 400 for the first generation, while the second generation was offered with only the SC 430 grade.

Powertrains only included three different engines over the years. The first generation offered a 3.0 L inline-6 and a 4.0 L V8 for the SC 300 and SC 400 respectively. The second generation offered only a 4.3 L V8.

These were mated with 4-speed, 5-speed, and 6-speed gearboxes depending on the time the model was produced and the engine selected.

A planned new generation for the model was canceled due to slowing sales. However, Lexus announced that the SC would be succeeded by the LC upon its discontinuation.

It was perhaps a good thing that the model was discontinued in 2010, as just two years later the presenters of Top Gear dubbed the SC 430 the “Worst Car in the History of the World.”
