Originally the Town and Country model was a station wagon sold in the USA by Chrysler from 1941 to 1988 but was re-imagined in 1990 as a minivan.
The decision was made to move away from the less popular station wagon layout that was previously popular with families who wanted to chuck the kids, the dog and their luggage in the back.
A minivan is able to do the same job but with a shorter length car by taking advantage of room above the car by being taller.
Another benefit is the taller doors on the sides and at the rear making accessibility easier for occupants and adding/removing cargo.
Moving to a minivan layout proved a huge success and the American automobile manufacturer managed to ride the wave of the minivan's popularity for years to come.
This all came to an end in 2016 when the Town and Country model was discontinued in favor of the far superior Pacifica.
Due to consumers flocking to crossover SUVs the minivan started to lose its appeal to the American and foreign car-buying market.
In response to this, the company invested $2 billion in making a minivan that would appeal to crossover SUV buyers including a more sporty appearance and modern comfort/safety features.
A few years after the Town & Country model was discontinued the name reappeared as a budget trim for the Pacifica, making it more accessible and taking advantage of the massive demand for the new minivan.
