The Voyager is a minivan designed and manufactured by the American company Chrysler, a division of Stellantis.
At the lower end of the price-point in minivans, it replaced the Dodge Grand Caravan and was first sold in 1988 in the USA and Canada.
Built upon the Chrysler K platform, it shared features with such cars as the Dodge Aries, Plymouth Reliant, Chrysler LeBaron, Dodge 400, Valiant Volare, Plymouth Caravelle coupe and the Chrysler New Yorker.
1991 – 1995 saw the last generation fitted with a manual transmission, this new model was available with a military upgrade specifically designed for the South African market and was fitted with extra large fuel tanks to allow for a longer range.
Models built from 1996 had the option of either a 2.4-liter 4 cylinder or a 3-liter V6.
Despite its popularity, the Voyager did horribly in the EURO NCAP tests. Results were so bad on the front impact that it completely destroyed the vehicle up to the middle and received no points, making it the worst in its group.
By the fifth generation, huge changes had been made to the vehicle, efforts were made to improve the quality internally to compete with more luxurious models. Now classed as a multi-purpose vehicle, the Voyager was larger and intended to appeal to the American family. The seating arrangement was somewhat unorthodox, moving away from the usual 2, 3, 2 configuration, Chrysler opted for two front seats, two middle seats and three in the rear.
The sixth generation sold from 2020, still available with seven seats but with a 6 speaker surround sound with active noise cancellation, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
From 2022, Chrysler made the Voyager available to corporate clients only, selling to only businesses or fleet buyers.
