Since 1998 Dodge has marketed the Durango as their flagship full-size SUV that features 3 rows of seating for up to 7 passengers.

For the first 2 generations running from 1998 through to 2011, the SUV was built on the same platform used by the Dakota and Ram pickup truck.

Now with the release of the third-generation in 2011 the company has switched its platform to the one used by the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

As Dodge is now focussing on becoming a performance brand they are reducing their range and so this is the only SUV left in their line-up.

After the SUV was released the sales grew quickly to almost 200,000 units selling per year though as the oil prices started to climb at the turn of the century buyers were scared off.

Sales collapsed to almost 500 units sold in 2010 though quickly they were reclaimed to the 60,000~ cars sold per year area where it has stuck since.

Dodge has stuck to a range of varied engine choices for the Durango since it was released which now include an entry-level 3.6 liter V6 through to 710bhp supercharged 6.2 liter V8.

Transmission options are also varied with buyers able to choose from a range of automatic gearboxes from 5 to 8-speed - powering all four wheels full-time.
