Hitting the roads in 1989 for the first time, the Subaru Legacy is the Japanese automobile manufacturer's flagship line.

It has sold all around the world and boasts total sales of well over 3.6 million over its lifetime.

The mid-size car sticks out in its class for offering a boxer engine and four-wheel drive as standard - boasting a low center of gravity and amazing traction on and off-road.

It was used in the early years of Subaru's presence in the World Rally Championship where it stood out until it was replaced with the similar but smaller Impreza model.

Over the years the model has been sold in some territories under different names such as the B4 in Isreal and the Liberty in Australia.

The first-generation model of the Legacy sold until 1993 was sold as the Isuzu Aska in some regions too.

From 1996 through to 2000 a trim featuring a higher ground clearance and reinforced body panels was offered called the Legacy Outback.

Eventually, the Outback trim became its own model, morphing into a crossover SUV to extend to the carmaker's range.

Over the years the Subaru Legacy could be fitted with different performance trims such as the GT-B twin-turbocharged version and the GT single-turbocharged version.

As of 2020 the Legacy has been discontinued (most likely as customer tastes move away from station-wagons) and buyers turned towards the range of new crossover SUVs.
