Taking over the role of platform for the World Rally Championship from the Legacy, the Subaru Impreza is slightly smaller and lighter.

The engineers took the Legacy chassis and shortened it to make the Impreza - a vehicle classed as a compact car replacing the company's Leone line.

Carrying on with what the Legacy was best known for the car featured a boxer-engine and four-wheel drive (a few front-wheel-drive models were also built though).

Customers loved the boxer engine in the front of the car as it provided a lower center-of-gravity when compared to alternatives on the market.

With the success of Colin Mcrae in the World Rally Championship racing in a modified version of the Impreza sales were rapidly increasing.

To respond to this popularity the Japanese automobile manufacturer released countless special editions pushing the capabilities of the car further and further.

Trims such as the WRX and WRX STI saw the car fitted with parts inspired by the racing version including high-power engines and racing brakes and suspension.

An Outback trim was also released for the Impreza that sold well on the Legacy previously featuring higher ground clearance, tougher panels and an off-road transmission.

Eventually, the Outback became its own model with the increasing popularity of crossover SUV's removing itself from the Impreza and Legacy models.
