Among the long-running models of Volkswagen sits the mid-size luxury crossover, the VW Touareg. It was originally named for the Tuareg people who inhabit the Sahara desert, and was first launched all the way back in 2002 for the 2003 model year. As of 2018, the VW Touareg is in its third generation, and still going strong, now developed alongside other luxury models under the VW umbrella, such as the Audi Q8, Bentley Bentayga, and the Lamborghini Urus.
The first-generation models, also known as 7L models, were made from 2002 to 2010, and included VW’s 4MOTION four-wheel-drive technology as a standard feature. The smallest standard powertrain was a 3.2-liter VR6 delivering up tio 237-hp, which was followed up in 2004 with the addition of a 3.6-liter VR6 getting up to 276-hp, and 270 lb-ft of torque.
At the top of the powertrain ladder was the 6-liter W12 engine, available in the first generation from 2005 to 2010, and getting up to 444-hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The W12 option was removed in subsequent generations, replaced with a top-end 4.2-liter V8 in the second generation, and a 3-liter V6 gasoline engine in the third generation, with 4.0L twin-turbo diesel and a plug-in hybrid variant coming on the market for the third generation in 2018.
The latest models have been the subject of particular praise for the quality of the interiors, not to mention the many upmarket features that have pushed the Touareg firmly into the luxury bracket. The latest version is sold in 6 different trim levels: SE, SEL, R-Line, R- Line Tech, Black Edition, and the Touareg R.
Even the entry-level models ride on attractive 19-inch alloys, and get touchscreen infotainment with gesture control, as well as front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control and more. R-Line models and above get four-zone climate control, sports suspension, 20-inch alloys and many other premium features, too.
