In 2010, the A1 was released into the market as Audi’s supermini offering. It has remained a staple of the German car manufacturer’s lineup since then.

In the decade-plus that it has been available, there have been only two generations. The latest of these was unveiled in 2018.

The model has typically been sold in a 3-door hatchback layout, but a 5-door version called the Sportback was also released in 2011. In addition to this, the A1 has typically been offered in three trims. These levels consist of the base SE, Sport, and S line.

There have been a number of special editions as well. The first of these was the A1 Motto series that started in 2010.

The A1 quickly became a very popular model under Audi, meaning that it was often the target of other manufacturers. The most notable rivals include the BMW 1 Series, SEAT Ibiza, Volkswagen Polo, Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

Powertrains for the first generation included both petrol and diesel options. These ranged between a 1.2 inline-4 to a 2.0 inline-4. Diesel options start with a 1.6 L inline-4 and go to a 2.0 L inline-4. All of these engines are turbocharged.

In 2018, Audi dropped the diesel engines with the release of the second generation. This left petrol engines ranging from a 1.0 L inline-3 to a 2.0 L inline-4.

These powertrains were typically mated with manual or automatic gearboxes ranging between 5-speed and 7-speed.

The A1 has seen great success on the market, managing to compete in the heavily populated supermini class. It was even named Car of the Year 2011 by What Car?
