The 1 Series first entered the market in 2004. It has remained on the market ever since. Since that time, there have been three generations to be released. The latest of these was unveiled in 2019.

As its name suggests, it is the smallest model offered by BMW, sitting beneath both the 2 Series and 3 Series. Interestingly, the 2 Series was introduced to take some of the 1 Series’ success.

It also has the most number of body layouts. These consist of the 2-door coupe and convertible, as well as the more common 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks.

Trim levels for the 1 Series have typically consisted of just three options. These were the base SE, Sport, and M Sport. The last of these was often referred to as the 1 Series M, rather than the expected M1.

The coupe version of the 1 series was replaced by the 2 Series in 2016, making the high-performance version of the 2-door coupe become the BMW M2.

Of course, the model faces BMW’s typical competition. These include the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Audi A3, and even the Volkswagen Golf.

One of the biggest changes the third generation brought was adopting FWD and AWD over the conventional RWD that has been used in countless BMWs.

Engines have consisted of various petrol and diesel options. Petrol engines have ranged between a 1.5 L inline-3 and up to a turbocharged 3.0 L inline-6 found in performance models.

Diesel versions hovered between a 1.5 L inline-3 and a 2.0 L inline-4.

These powertrains were coupled with either a manual or automatic transmission. These have typically been between 6-speed and 7-speed respectively, but there were some exceptions like the 8-speed automatic found in the latest iteration.
