Taking over from the 100 model by the same German carmaker is the Audi A6, first hitting the roads in 1994.

It's an executive car that sits in between the company's compact A4 and the larger A8 model.

Underneath, the platform that the car is built on was carried over from the 100 but vastly improved and tailored to this model alone.

A wide range of engines helped the A6 appeal to as many demographics and regions around the world as possible, ranging from a sensible 1.9-liter turbo-diesel through to a powerful 4.2-liter gasoline V8.

Straight away the car scored fantastically in safety tests with Euro NCAP, earning 5 out 5 stars.

When the second generation model of the A6 was introduced in 1997 the safety scores dropped to 3 out 5 stars for occupants, though engine and gearbox options were expanded further.

These poor safety ratings were reversed though in generation 3 when they returned to the previous 5 out of 5 stars for adult occupants, 4 out of 5 for child occupants but 1 out of 5 stars for pedestrians.

Many special editions have come and gone during the car's life, including the company's famous RS trim as well as the Allroad heavy-duty trim that features tough body panels and higher ground clearance.
