The PT Cruiser first made its debut in 2000 as a retro-styled compact. The ‘PT’ part of the name stands for Personal Transport. It was later discontinued in 2010.

Only a single generation of the model was released during its time on the market. The sole iteration featured either a 2-door or a 4-door layout.

Its unique styling meant that the model was fairly polarizing. However, under Chrysler’s guidance, both Chevrolet and Dodge released their own versions of retro-styled models in hopes to form a trend.

The PT Cruiser was a rival to both the Chevrolet HHR and Dodge Caliber, two other heavily stylized retro models.

Chrysler heavily leaned into the retro styling for the model, which many consider to be hit or miss.

Evidence of this can be seen with two special editions called the Flame and Woodie packages. These two versions paid clear homage to the likes of the old-school hotrods and wood-paneled vehicles of yesteryear respectively.

Other notable special editions include the Route 66, Pacific Coast Highway, Sunset Boulevard, Series 5, and Cruiser Sport.

Chrysler also released a high-performance variant in the PT Cruiser GT.

Trim levels consisted of a whopping 12 levels, special editions notwithstanding. These ranged from the Base up to the premium Limited. The various other packages featured only slightly different variations in terms of interior and exterior trim.

The PT Cruiser was offered various engine sizes. These mainly included petrol engines, but there was a single diesel option offered. The petrol versions ranged from a 1.6 L inline-4 up to the turbocharged 2.4 L inline-4 found in the GT model. The diesel engine was a turbocharged 2.2 L inline-4.

The model was discontinued due to low sales due to its unique and unorthodox styling.
