The V60 first came into production in 2010. There have been only two generations since its release, with the latest version having come to market in 2018.

The station wagon was introduced 10 years after the release of the S60, which represents the foundations of the later version.

Both generations of the V60 offer a crossover version called the V60 Cross Country, which was unveiled in 2015. This variant features a raised ride height to increase off-road capabilities and other common crossover additions.

Competition has typically come from other executive brands that offer a station wagon model. This includes the Audi A6 Allroad and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Trim levels have changed over the years. These were updated to just three packages in 2022. The new levels are Core, Plus, and Ultimate.

Powertrains used to consist of petrol engines ranging from a 2.0 L inline-4 to a 3.0 L inline-6, but Volvo later limited these in the second generation to only a turbocharged 2.0 L inline-4. This restriction can be seen with most Volvo models these days.

Diesel options range from a 1.6 L inline-4 to a 2.4 L inline-5 in the first generation. Again, these were restricted to a single 2.0 L inline-4 later on.

As a result of the Swedish carmaker’s commitment to reduced emissions, both generations feature hybrid powertrains. The first version was a diesel hybrid, while the newer models are outfitted with a petrol hybrid system. Both of these are plug-in hybrids.

Like some of their other hybrid models, these have received great acclaim. The first-generation hybrid was selected as a top three finalist for the 2013 World Green Car of the Year.

In 2022, Volvo announced that the standard version of the V60 would be retired, leaving only the crossover variant.
