The Volvo XC40 first entered the subcompact luxury SUV segment in 2017. Since that time, there has been only one generation.

The luxury crossover meant Volvo was able to take advantage of the surging popularity of the crossover market, which they managed to do very well. The model was quickly met with criticalacclaim, often sitting at the top of the class.

It managed to win a number of awards just after its release. The most notable of these were the European Car of the Year and What Car? awards.

Its typical rivals include the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class, and the Volkswagen Taos.

The XC40 comes in as the smallest sibling to Volvo’s other SUV offerings. It currently sits beneath both the XC60 and the XC90.

There are three trim levels offered by Volvo. These consist of the Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription.

Interestingly, there has not yet been a high-performance Polestar version yet.

Petrol powertrain configurations available range from a turbocharged 1.5 L inline-3 up to a turbocharged 2.0 L inline-4.

Diesel options consist of a single turbocharged 2.0 L inline-4. As with all of Volvo’s new SUVs, engines are restricted to 2.0 L sizes.

There is also a plug-in hybrid version that is paired with the smaller petrol engine.

In 2020, Volvo debuted the XC40 Recharge, a fully electric model of the XC40. This is a part of the Swedish manufacturer’s plan to electrify their entire range by 2025.

This hybrid variant is fitted with a range of electrical motors. These include different single motors and dual motors for the various drivetrains respectively.
