First entering production in 2002 the Volvo XC90 went on to enter its second generation of design in 2015 which is the version that's on sale now.

It's a 3-row mid-size crossover SUV seating 7 passengers in a 2/3/2 configuration much like the Audi Q7 and optional with the BMW X5.

Being a crossover SUV gives the car the benefits of an SUV like extra interior space while cutting down on the heavyweight of off-roading equipment that leads to higher running costs.

First-generation XC90's had a wide range of engine options ranging from a modest 2.4 liter turbo-diesel through to a performance-centric 3 litre twin-turbocharged gasoline.

Customers could also choose between a range of manual and automatic transmissions powering either just the front wheels or all four (optional).

When the second-generation model hit showrooms the choice was reduced down to just one sized engine, a 2 litre. Customers could decide whether that 2 liter unit was diesel or gasoline and whether it had a single or twin turbochargers fitted.

The newer model of XC90 also had the option of a plug-in-hybrid dual-motor setup to capture lose energy during braking as well as charge-up on their driveway.

As this is a Volvo the safety aspect is a major concern and so the car achieves almost perfect scores with Euro NCAP and NHTSA.
