The S-Max first made its debut in 2006 as a part of Ford’s ‘Max’ line of minivans, which includes the B-Max and C-Max. Only two generations of the model have been released since its release, with the latest being unveiled in 2015.

The model received a fairly great reception on its release, even being voted European Car of the Year 2013.

A part of this success was the fact that the S-Max was the first model to feature Ford’s now iconic Kinetic Design styling.

Those who were hoping for a third generation will have been disappointed to hear Ford announce that the model will be discontinued in 2023. The main reason for this was Ford’s ambition to produce more electric vehicles, as well as the declining popularity of minivans.

Competition in the class has included the likes of the SEAT Alhambra, Volkswagen Sharan, and Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Tourer.

The seven-seat minivan is powered by a number of both diesel and petrol engines. For those wanting a petrol, options start with a 1.5 L inline-4 and go up to a 2.5 L inline-4 hybrid.

Diesel options are limited to three different 2.0 L inline-4s. The main difference in these is that the latest version which debuted in 2019 featured a twin-turbocharger system compared to the traditional single turbo.

All of these powertrains were mated with either a 5-speed or 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Trim levels consist of the Zetec, Titanium, Titanium Sport, like many other similar Ford offerings. However, the model also got an exclusive executive package called the Vignale.
