The RX-8 first made its debut at the beginning of 2003. The iconic sports car then remained on the market for just under a decade until it was discontinued in 2012.
During its stay on the market, only a single generation was released. There was however a mid-cycle given to the model in 2008.
The model sat at the top of the Mazda lineup at the time, above siblings like the RX-5 and RX-7.
Only a single trim level was offered upon its release. However, Mazda went on to release a number more, eventually offering Touring, Sport, Grand Touring trim packages. There was also a 40th Anniversary Edition version released in 200.
One of the main reasons the RX-8 received a lot of attention was the fact that it was fitted with a rotary motor, which is somewhat of a rarity in cars. The model was fitted with a 1.3 L Renesis twin-rotor motor.
This was the only engine offered with the model. However, a number of transmissions were coupled with it. These were typically a 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed or 6-speed automatic.
The model was met with critical acclaim, going on to 37 international motoring awards. The most notable of these were the 2003 International Engine of the 2003 Year and Japan Car of the Year Award.
The discontinuation of the RX-8 as a result of declining sales in the European market. Increasing emission regulations in Europe were also a contributing factor to the retirement of the hugely awarded vehicle.
