Being classed as a compact executive car means that the Audi A4 competes against the likes of the Lexus IS and Kia Stinger ranges.

Originally brought in to take over from the Audi 80 model that had been the company's flagship family car since 1966.

Now in its fifth generation of design, the A4 is sold as either a saloon or estate with the engine in the front and either the front wheels powered or all 4.

Over the years it has grown in size with the latest rendition of the car being about 5% larger than the original that we first saw in the mid-1990s.

Underneath the car is a shared platform with the Q5 and A6 as well as many other models from the German car manufacturer.

First-generation models of the A4 were built almost exactly the same as the Volkswagen Passat at the time.

During its first face-lift in 1999, the car saw its appearance drastically improve and along with it a new range of special editions was added to the order sheet.

An S and RS trim were made available to customers which would carry on being available through all the new generations up until today.

The RS trim is Audi's top-of-the-line high-performance variant that features a four-wheel drive and a larger turbocharged engine with aggressive styling.
