Classed as a subcompact executive car the Audi A3 competes directly with the Acura ILX the Buick Verano, first introduced in the mid 1990s.

Originally if you looked underneath the first 2 generations of the car you would find the same chassis that was used on the Audi TT and Volkswagen Golf.

Then with the introduction of the third generation A3 the car was moved to the MQB chassis used by cars such as the Skoda Octavia and Volkswagen Atlas.

Third-generation models were also the first to break away from the car being available as only a 3/5 door hatchback - buyers could now opt for a sedan or convertible version.

Assembly of the 2013 third-generation models was also taking place in India and China to cope with massive demand from the emerging markets.

The hardcore performance trim "RS3" was introduced in 2015 following the success of the RS4, RS5 and RS6 previously.

Under the hood of the RS3 is a 2.5 liter mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and power is fed through all 4 wheels to the road.

In 2020 the latest generation of the car was released featuring styling heavily influenced by Lamborghini, a separate brand of Audi's parent Volkswagen.
