A small family compact car produced for Citroen by the PSA group and successor to the Citroen Xsara in 2004, the first generations were intended to be a car for the masses.
Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, the C4 could be purchased as either a hatchback coupe (3 doors) or a 5-door.
Corporate cousin to the Peugeot 307, the C4's major selling point was the new technology installed. For a car in its category, the C4 had a number of safety and comfort features like a lane departure warning, directional headlights and even a perfume dispensary built into the ventilation system, a much more elegant solution to the garish Christmas tree scents hanging from rearview mirrors. Built with a glass roof on standard models, the C4 also had revolutionary-shaped airbags. Upon deployment, these airbags would comfortably fill the spaces around the individual fitting to the passenger.
The second generation was entirely larger with the three-door variant dropping in favor of offering only 5 door options. This decision was made due to a number of reasons, firstly sales were slow for the three-door and secondly, Citroen did not wish to compete with the DS3. This time with a less eccentric design, the C4 was more angular with more aggressive styling to include a huge bumper and ribs running the length of the wing.
A variation on the C4 was produced solely for the Japanese market as a saloon, tapping into the Japanese market's desire for larger booted family cars.
By 2020, the C4 was styled in a coupe SUV fashion featuring an upgraded interior, allowing it to compete with market alternatives such as the Vauxhall Astra, SEAT Leon and the Skoda Octavia.
