The modern version of the Dart first made its debut in 2012. It then remained on the market for only four years before it was retired. Obviously, during this short time, there was only a single generation released.

The original name was used for a classic Dodge model that was in production between 1959 and 1976.

Depending on the region it was sold, it was also called the Fiat Viaggio and Fiat Ottimo. The Ottimo was also sold as a 5-door hatchback version.

Competition for the Dart typically came from the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, and its corporate cousin, the Chevrolet Cruze.

The 4-door sedan was offered exclusively with front-wheel drive. This, along with the Ottimo, was built on the Compact US Wide platform which is a modified version of Fiat’s Compact Platform.

Dodge offered the Dart in four trims. These were the base SE, the mid-level SXT, followed by the Limited, and the top-of-the-line GT.

There was also the Aero special edition which was based on the SXT with a focus on better fuel economy. This was done using aerodynamic techniques.

Only petrol engines were offered for the Dart. These were various inline-4 engines - all of which were turbocharged. Depending on the selected trim package, these changed and were a 1.4 L FIRE, a 2.0 L Tigershark, and a 2.4 L Tigershark engine.

Engines were mated with manual or dual-clutch transmissions. These were offered in 5-speed, 6-speed, and 7-speed models. The 6-speed version was only offered as an automatic.

The Dart was discontinued as a result of poor sales. In addition to this, Fiat Chrysler announced that they planned to focus more on the emerging popularity of the crossover SUV market.
