In an attempt to reduce the huge range of cars Ford built to keep different markets happy they set out to create a compact car that could sell in both European and North American markets.

Previously models such as the Mondeo (marketed as the Taurus in the USA) struggled in the North American region yet did fantastically well in Europe.

The same was also true in other sectors of automobiles, especially compact cars so the British and German Ford teams joined forces to create the ultimate globally relevant small car.

What came out of this was the Ford Focus and sales began in 1999 in Europe with North America seeing them a year later.

Customers were happy with the offering on both sides of the Atlantic ocean thanks to the wide range of trims, engines and transmissions on offer.

A few years later in 2002, the Focus experimented with a high-performance trim called the RS - almost every part of it was improved to make it an affordable sports car for the road.

Under the hood was a 2 liter turbocharged gasoline engine with power being fed through a limited-slip-differential and stopping power is provided by larger Brembo brakes.

The tradition of offering a performance trim was continued with the introduction of the second generation where another variation was offered called the ST, though this wasn't as hardcore as the RS.

With the release of the fourth generation in 2018 (the most recent version) the performance trims were scrapped and the company has focused on the car as being a sensible family runaround instead.

Although the Focus didn't carry on the ST tradition the Ford Edge model did add one to their order sheet for those looking for a bit more excitement on the road.
