The GLB first made its debut in the compact luxury crossover class in 2019. Of course, there have only been a single generation since then.

As its name suggests, the model is positioned between the GLA and GLC in terms of the Mercedes-Benz SUV family.

Like the other models in the lineup, its name makes use of the German carmaker’s naming convention. The ‘G’ represents the SUV models as an homage to the iconic G-Class, the ‘L’ is used for the series of SUVs, and the ‘B’ indicates the model's size.

Competition from outside the company comes from the Land Rover Discovery Sport, BMW X3, and Volkswagen Tiguan AllSpace.

Similar to other models in the family, trim levels are based on the engine choice. The petrol trims consist of the 180, 200, 250 4MATIC, and AMG 35 4MATIC. These are similar to the diesel options, with the main difference between the two being a 220d 4MATIC option instead of the 250 4MATIC, as well as a lack of the AMG variant.

However, the diesel options were discontinued for certain markets in 2020.

These are the same engines used by the Mercedes A-Class. As each engine indicates, the GLB is offered in both FWD and Mercedes’ 4MATIC 4WD.

Transmissions for these engines are either a 7-speed automatic or an 8-speed automatic. The AMG variant is fitted with an 8-speed AMG Speedshift DCT.

The model is also the basis of the EV version, called the Mercedes-Benz EQB. This model is offered in both hybrid and fully-electric and made its debut in 2021.
