The Jimny first made its debut in 1970. Since that time, a total of four generations have been released, with the latest of these being unveiled in 2018.
Upon the arrival of the fourth generation, Suzuki announced that roughly 2.85 million models have been sold since its initial release. This makes it one of the best-selling Suzuki models of all time.
The Jimny is a fairly unique model. It bears a fairly striking resemblance to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Jeep Renegade, and Land Rover Defender 90. However, it sits far below all three of these offerings in terms of pricing and size. This is what puts the model in its own category.
Owing to this, it is also part of the kei-car class in Japan, which is what gives the Jimny a set list of parameters. The closest other competition was the Mazda AZ-Offroad, which was simply a rebadged version sold from 1998.
The latest model, the 2022 version, is only available in two trim levels. These are the GL 5MT and GLX 4AT. The key difference between these are manual or automatic transmissions.
The latest version was released with just two engine options. These consist of a turbocharged 658 cc inline-3 and a 1.5 L inline-4.
These were mated with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.
Suzuki did offer the model with diesel options, but this was stopped with the third generation, which came about in 1998.
Suzuki recently announced that an all-electric version of the Jimny will come to the markets, but only in 2030.
