First and foremost a city car, the Splash is a vehicle manufactured by the Japanese automaker Suzuki.
First shown at the Paris Motor Show in 2006, the Splash debuted as a concept car. Following on from the successful unveiling, Suzuki developed the Splash with different features and trim levels depending on the Country in which it would sell.
Similar cars that it competed against were listed as the Ford Fiesta or the SEAT Ibiza, both being small town cars.
For the European market, the Splash offers three petrol engine variants to choose from; a 1-liter 3-cylinder and a 4-cylinder 1.2-liter engine, with a diesel 1.3-liter turbodiesel making up the foursome.
Sold as the Vauxhall Agila in the UK and Opel Agila in Europe, only the 1.2-liter engine was sold in Japan from 20th October 2008.
Popular in the Indian market, the Splash had to change its name as Ford had already reserved the moniker and so is rebadged as ‘Maruti Suzuki Ritz.’ With 200,000 units sold in the Indian market within the first 37 months, Suzuki offers a huge range of Splash’s all with different specifications. This allows for the costs to be as much or as little as the buyer likes (within reason) and perhaps explains why it was so successful here.
Ten different models went on sale in India with as many as 5 petrol engines and numerous diesels, the latter was an efficient turbo 1.3-liter which was actually supplied by Fiat.
Four years after the Splash first went on sale, it underwent a global facelift with the most notable difference found internally in the technology and interior.
Externally, it was almost identical to its predecessor. In China, the Splash is known as the ‘Changhe Splash’ as a 1.4-liter petrol engine vehicle.
The Suzuki Splash’s run ended in Europe after Suzuki brought out the second generation Ignis, an extremely similar vehicle.
Production ended similarly in 2016 for Indonesia and 2017 for India.
