Achieving the title of the best-selling SUV in Europe is the Volkswagen Tiguan, a crossover SUV originally built on the same platform as the Passat.
Later models from the second generation were built on the same platform as the Golf and Audi A3.
It's a massively popular SUV seeing almost a million sales in 2019 alone and over 6 million sales overall as of mid-2020.
Sales began back in 2007 in North America and Europe but China had to wait until 2009 for their versions to be introduced.
Chinese versions are either powered by a turbocharged 1.8 or 2-litre gasoline engine and is identical in every other way to the international model.
Safety ratings for the car are phenomenal with all disciplines earning 5 out of 5 stars, rare for an SUV as they usually fail on rollover at least.
The introduction of the second generation in 2016 saw the introduction of 2 split models, a short-wheelbase and a long-wheelbase version.
Engine choices were revised to a smaller list and an R performance trim was introduced for the first time.
This R trim is powered by the same 2-litre turbocharged engine found in the Golf R delivering 316bhp.
Following trends of similar SUVs the Volkswagen Tiguan has recently added an X coupe version of the body that features a stylish sloping roof as the Audi Q3 did with its Sportback version.
The German automaker also launched the "Allspace" version which is slightly longer than the regular model.
