The Volkswagen Up, stylized as the up!, first made its debut in 2011. Unlike a number of its rebadged counterparts, the model has remained on the market ever since its release.

These rebadged versions include the Skoda Citigo and SEAT Mii. The rebadged Skoda version was manufactured alongside the SEAT Mii until they were both discontinued in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Other than its corporate counterparts, the only real competition came from the Toyota Aygo and Hyundai i10.

During its time on the market, there have essentially been three generations to be released. These include a single generation of the base version, as well as two generations for the e-up. The latest version of these was unveiled in 2019.

The trim levels for the up! consist of four options. These are the base Easy, followed by the Active, Ambition, and Style trim levels. There were also a number of special editions like the Monte Carlo and Fun packages. There was also a GT version for a brief time.

Interestingly, these are the same trim levels used for the SEAT and Skoda variants.

The available powertrains consist of three 1.0 L engines for the up! These were two petrol engines, both of which are inline-3s, as well as an inline-3 that runs on petrol or compressed natural gas used for the eco-up.

These engines were mated with either a 5-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission.

Volkswagen also released a fully-electric version called the e-up in 2013.

The up! managed to win notable recognition since its release. The best awards it received include the 2012 World Car of the Year and 2013 What Car? City Car of the Year.
