The S90 first entered production in 2016. There has only been a single generation of the model since its release, but it did receive a refresh in 2020.
This refresh consisted mainly of a facelift in which the front and rear fascia were restyled.
While the S90 is a 4-door sedan, it is also offered as a station wagon called the V90. Upon its release, it overtook the S60 as the Swedish company’s largest flagship car.
Competition for the S90 typically comes from its German counterparts. These include the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The Jaguar XF is also another common rival.
There are three trim levels currently offered for the S90. These consist of the Inscription, Momentum, and R-Design, which are offered for each of the various engine choices.
Powertrains for the single model include only a single engine for the petrol, diesel, and hybrid variants. These are all 2.0 L inline-4 engines.
The hybrid version is coupled with two permanent magnet synchronous AC motors. The front motor has a rating of 34 kW, while the rear motor has a rating of 64 kW. These motors are powered by three different batteries ranging from 9.2 kWh to 11.6 kWh.
Volvo has coupled these engines with one of two 6-speed manual gearboxes or a single 8-speed automatic transmission.
Production of the S90 and V90 was done in Sweden until 2017. At this point, most of the production was moved to the Daqing plant in China.
In 2022, Volvo limited the model exclusively to the Recharge hybrid version as a testament to the company’s commitment to having an exclusively hybrid lineup.
