The Volkswagen Amarok first made its debut in 2010 and is still on the market today. It is currently in its second generation, which was released in 2022.

The second generation model is based heavily on the T6 version of the Ford Ranger, which is also one of its biggest rivals. Ford and VW actually worked together in the design of the new versions of each model respectively, aiming to take over the mid-size pickup truck market.

Other competitors include the Nissan Frontier and, of course, the legendary Toyota Hilux.

The first generation featured base Trendline and Highline, among others.

Trim levels for the latest generation consist of three standard packages, as well as special editions. These consist of the base version, Life, and Style. It is also offered in the Aventura and PanAmericana packages. These two trims are focused on performance for the road and off-road respectively.

Petrol powertrains range from the 2.0 L inline-4 in the older generation up to the new turbocharged 2.3 L inline-4 found in the second generation.

Diesel options consist of two 2.0 L inline-4 and a 3.0 L V6 TDI CR. All of these are turbocharged, but there is also a twin-turbocharged version for the 2.0 L.

These are coupled with various manual and automatic transmissions. Manual options consist of both 5-speed and 6-speed transmissions. Automatic models include 6-speed, 8-speed, and 10-speed transmissions. These pairings depend on the trim and engine options selected.

According to Volkswagen, it is very likely that a fully-electric version of the Amarok will hit the markets by 2025.
