The QX50 nameplate first made its debut in 2013 as the update to the Infiniti EX, which was around since 2007. Under the new name, there have been two generations to hit the markets. The latest of these was unveiled in 2019.

Before the name update, Infiniti offered the crossover in EX25, EX37, EX35, and EX30d grades. Immediately thereafter, these became the QX50, AWD, Journey, and AWD Journey.

Despite being sold under Nissan’s luxury car brand Infiniti, it has also been sold as the Nissan Skyline Crossover.

As an executive crossover, it was intended to compete with other big names like the Genesis GV70, BMW X3, and Volvo XC60. However, it quickly became clear that the QX50 would often struggle to keep up with these models in terms of styling and performance.

Infiniti has offered the model in five trim levels. These consist of the Pure, Luxe, Essential, Sensory, and Autograph.

There have also been four powertrain options in total over the two generations. The first generation offered two petrol and a single diesel. These were V6 engines that ranged from 3.0 L to 3.5 L. These options were streamlined to only a turbocharged 2.0 L inline-4 for the second generation.

While the first generation powertrains were mated with a 7-speed automatic, the second generation shifted to using a CVT system exclusively.

In 2021, Infiniti debuted the QX55, which is essentially a coupe SUV version. It was also clear upon its release that it is the planned successor to the Infiniti FX. This model will likely attempt to take on others in the class like the Audi Q3 Sportback.
