The 8 Series first made its debut in 1990 for a time. It was then retired in 1999, until its reintroduction in 2018. It has remained on the market ever since.

These two separate spans on the market represent the two generations for the model.

Like with most BMW models, the badge represents a series of different models. For the 8 Series, this includes a 2-door coupe, 2-door convertible, and a 4-door coupe.

As its name suggests, the 8 Series is the largest car currently sold by the German car maker.

Competition comes from other grand coupes like the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Lexus LC.

The various trim options for the model consist of the typical BMW options. These are the base 840i, 840i xDrive, and M850i xDrive. These are based on the powertrain and drivetrains selected.

Of course, there is the famous M8 model that is a very powerful, high-performance version. This includes the M8 Competition. There is also the B8, which is an ultra-luxury version released by Alpina in 2021.

In terms of powertrains, the first generation consisted solely of petrol engines ranging from a 4.0 L V8 through to a 5.6 L V12.

The second generation introduced a single turbocharged 3.0 L inline-6 diesel engine. This version was coupled with a very small 8 kW electric boost motor. BMW also reduced the size of the petrol options significantly. These now consisted of just a 3.0 L inline-6 and a 4.4 L V8.

Transmissions have ranged between a 4-speed automatic found in the first gen models up to an 8-speed automatic used for all of the second-gen.
