The BMW X1 first made its debut in 2009 and has remained on the market since then. There have been a total of three generations released. The latest of these was introduced to the market in 2022.
It is currently the smallest model in the BMW SUV family, sitting below both the BMW X3 and X5. It does share some similarities with the X2.
As with any BMW offering, the X1 faces competition from its German counterparts - Audi’s Q3 and Mercedes-Benz’s GLA. Other competition typically comes from the Volvo XC40 and Jaguar E-Pace.
BMW offered four trim levels for the model, like most of its SUVs. These consist of the base SE, followed by Sport, XLine, and M Sport.
Interestingly, the M Sport variant is more of a styling package than the conventional performance package. The package only features a small number of changes. These include adaptive suspension and lowered ride height.
Petrol engines range from a turbocharged smaller 1.5 L inline-3 to a turbocharged 3.0 L inline-6 found in the first version. Diesel powertrains range similarly but are limited to a turbocharged 2.0 L inline-4. BMW also offers these larger diesel engines with twin-turbochargers.
BMW introduced hybrid powertrains for the Chinese variant in 2016.
This was done again in 2022 for the third generation, which features both plug-in and mild hybrid powertrains for both diesel and petrol options. These hybrid versions were given an ‘e’ at the end of their name.
BMW coupled these engines with various different transmissions. These consist of a 6-speed manual and automatics, a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, and an 8-speed automatic.
