The largest model in the BMW range, the X7 first made its debut in 2018. Despite being announced a year earlier, the model only entered the market at the beginning of 2019.

Of course, there have only been a single generation to hit the markets since then. It did receive a facelift in 2022 though.

Sitting at the top of the line positions it above models like the X5 and X6, as its name hints at. Competition from other full-size SUVs typically comes from the Audi Q7, Land Rover Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, and Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

Trim levels are mostly based on the engine selection, but there are also the Design Pure Excellence, Sport, and M Sport trims. Other notable versions include the M50i and M60i, which were released in 2019 and 2023 respectively.

There is also the ultra-luxury version called the XB7, which was released by BMW modifier Alpina in 2020.

Because trims are based on engines, there are a variety of both petrol and diesel options. Petrol offerings range from a turbocharged 3.0 L inline-6 to a twin-turbocharged 4.4 L V8.

Interestingly, diesel options are limited to only a 3.0 L inline-6. BMW uses turbochargers to provide additional power for these. This includes a single, twin, and quad-turbocharged version. However, the quad version was discontinued in 2020.

Despite having so many engine options, all of these are mated with the same 8-speed automatic transmission.

Owing to its high-end luxury status, all models are offered with BMW’s xDrive as standard.

In 2023, BMW released the XM, a fully-electric SUV that is heavily based on the X7.
