The Wagoneer first made its debut in 1963. It remained on the market until 1993 in this form, when it was discontinued. Its hiatus lasted until it was recently reintroduced in its latest generation in 2022 - much to the praise of lovers of the original versions.
Despite rumors of the model coming to the market many years ago, it was delayed by Chrysler. This was done tactfully to allow its corporate cousin, the Dodge Durango, to find its audience with less competition.
The model has had four generations to hit the markets, which also includes the Grand Wagoneer variant. This version represents a high-class luxury version of the SUV.
Built on the RAM DT platform, the latest full-size SUV features the same 5-door layout found in most other models in the class. Competition typically comes from the likes of the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Mercedes-Benz GLS.
With competition like that, time will tell whether the relative newcomer will make it in the big leagues.
Powertrains for the latest version consist of only gasoline engines ranging from a twin-turbocharged 3.0 L Hurricane inline-6 up to the 6.4 L Hemi V8 found in the Grand Wagoneer.
All of these come exclusively with an 8-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission.
All of this allows for the either RWD or optional 4WD systems for the base model, while the Grand Wagoneer came with 4WD as standard.
Besides this version, General Motors also produced the Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L long-wheelbase variants as of 2023.
Trim levels for both models consisted of the base Series I, followed by the Series II, and Series III. The larger version also came with an exclusive trim level called Obsidian. Another variant is the Off-Road packages available in select trims.
