First launched back in 2003, the Kia Picanto is a subcompact city car that was built and marketed as a replacement for the Kia Visto (also badged as the Hyundai Atos). Its design and construction were meant to comply with South Korea’s “light car” (Gyeongcha) vehicle category, which gave owners certain tax and other financial incentives.

The Kia Picanto has existed in two main styles, firstly a 5-door hatchback that was on sale from 2003 and remains available today. Between 2011 and 2017, the Picanto was also offered up as a 3-door hatchback. It’s made with a front-mounted engine and FWD drivetrain.

In total, there have been 3 generations of Kia Picanto made. The first ran from 2003 to 2011, the second from 2011 to 2017 (which included the 3-door hatchback version) and the latest was launched in 2017, and facelifted in 2020. Over the years, the Picanto has become particularly praised for its mechanical reliability. In 2013, it even received the title “most reliable car in the UK” based on data generated by website moneysupermarket.com, a prominent financial services comparison platform.

Its exterior is compact and straight-forward, with design evolving to make the front-end more stylish with a larger grille, sweep-back headlights and more. The 2020 facelift brought new bumpers to the GT-Line and X-Line trim levels, as well as a new 8-inch infotainment screen, new upholstery options, and more.

Design became a sore point for Kia when they were compelled to accuse Chinese manufacturer Yogomo in 2015 of plagiarizing the Picanto’s design for their low-speed EV the Yogomo 330. The Picanto has also featured rather prominently in the world of racing, appearing in the Kia Platinum Cup in Poland, the Korea Speed Festival, and the Kia Picanto GT Cup in Portugal.
