Created originally for the European market, the Venga was a 5-door vehicle that could seat 5 passengers, built by the South Korean car manufacturer Kia.

The first generation of Venga models were designed by Gregory Guillaume and Kia’s head designer Peter Schreyer. Showcased at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the Venga shared its platform with the Soul where it was evident that Kia had worked on maximizing the internal space whilst keeping the exterior small, allowing it to navigate city streets easily.

For such a small car, the headroom and subsequently roof were quite tall and the boot held a surprising amount of cargo, 440 liters to be exact. The latter could only be achieved when the rear seats were folded flat, however.

The Venga had many features that were perhaps synonymous with more premium vehicles, Kia fitted the Venga with a keyless entry system, heated front seats, panoramic sunroof, 6 airbags and tensioned seatbelts (these could automatically tighten upon detection of a collision to prevent whiplash).

Lasting just a single generation from 2009 to 2019, the Venga was put in direct competition with the Hyundai ix20 and Nissan Note.

Review sites argued that the Hyundai ix20 had a better all-round driving experience, in fact, feedback for the car was wholly mixed.

Motoring publication Top Gear only gave the Venga a score of 4/10; this was mainly due to the lack of excitement, there was no real issue with the features or build, it apparently was just ‘as sensible and tasty as a dry cracker.’

Kia pulled the vehicle from production in 2019, replacing it with the Stonic, a crossover SUV designed to compete with the shifting market requirements.
