The Land Rover Freelander first hit the markets in 1997. It then remained on the market until its discontinuation in 2015.
Land Rover later released the Freelander 2 in 2006. This was the second and final generation for the model until it was eventually succeeded by the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque model.
The model received fairly high praise since its release. This meant that it faced some of the best of the best in the crossover class. The most notable of these include the Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, and BMW X3.
Trim options changed significantly from the first and second generations. For the latest version, these included the base S, GS, XS, Dynamic/SE, HSE, and HSE Lux/HST. This was done to realign the trim levels with Land Rover’s modern trim options.
Petrol engine options have consisted of engines ranging between the smaller 1.8 L inline-4 found in the first iteration up to the 3.2 L inline-6 in the final version. Diesel engines consist of two 2.0 L inline-4s for the first version, and three 2.2 L inline-4s for the second.
These engines have been made by BMW, Ford, Volvo, and obviously Land Rover. This was a result of Land Rover’s ownership history.
Interestingly, the Freelander was the first model in the Land Rover lineup to ever offer any sort of 2-wheel drive. This happened in 2010.
Transmissions have typically consisted of only 5-speed and 6-speed gearboxes for the first and second generations respectively. Both versions offered either a manual or automatic transmission.
