The Mazda2 is a subcompact car that first entered the market in 2002. In its 20-plus years on the market, there have been three generations, with the most recent iteration being unveiled in 2014.
It is currently the smallest car in the Mazda family, which puts it just below the Mazda3 - as its name suggests.
It typically has a 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback layout. The hatchback version is far more popular, which sparked the release of a 3-door version.
It is also sold under various different names depending on the region it is sold. In North America, the third-generation models were sold as the Scion iA, as well as various versions of the Toyota Yaris.
The huge amount of competition in the subcompact class means that the Mazda2 goes up against some very notable cars from other manufacturers. The most iconic of these are the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, and Opel/Vauxhall Corsa.
Engine options for the Mazda2 feature both petrol and diesel configurations. Petrol models are typically fitted with engines ranging from 1.3 L to 1.5 L Skyactiv inline-4 engines.
Mazda also released a hybrid version, which is powered by a Skyactiv-Hybrid drivetrain. This features a larger 1.5 L engine, as well as mild hybrid capabilities in the latest models that are driven by the Mazda M Hybrid system.
Diesel options consist of similarly sized engines. However, the most common is the turbocharged 1.5 L Skyactiv-D inline-4.
Transmissions are usually either 5-speed or 6-speed Skyactiv-MT manual transmissions, but there is also the option for a 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic gearbox available.
Trim levels for newer models start with the base Active, Dynamic, and premium Hazumi.
The hybrid version released in 2022 is hugely similar to its cousin, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid.
