Known as the Atenza in Japan, the Mazda6 (or Mazda 6) replaced the 626 model by the same manufacturer as its flagship mid-sized car.

Selling faster than any previous Mazda made before it, the Mazda6 started the revolution by the company that saw it jump in popularity after its 2002 release.

After this model came the similarly styled Mazda2, Mazda3 and Mazda5 that each took on their own sector of the market successfully.

The car owes its original success to its large range of trims, engines and transmissions that customers can mix and match to suit their preferences.

For those wanting a slightly more exciting package the performance trim that Mazda called the "MPS" (or the Mazdaspeed Atenza) in some markets features a turbocharged 2.3 litre gasoline engine.

Alongside its powerful engine were a 6-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive to ensure it kept traction during tough driving.

2007 saw the introduction of the second generation Mazda6 which regained the platform that is shared with Ford and its exterior styling was modernized slightly.

Then in 2012, the Mazda6 range switched to a platform that wasn't shared outside of the company but could be found underneath the Mazda3, CX-5 and CX-9.

Over the years the car has retained a very similar design with only slight changes made to help modernize its appearance with the most recent taking place in 2018 - also adding new mobile device connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
