The MX-5 first hit the Japanese and North American markets in 1989 and has remained in production since then. During its time on the market, a total of four generations have been released.

The latest of these generations, which was given the designation of ND, was unveiled in 2014.

The MX-5 goes by a number of names, depending on the generation and the region in question. One of its more popular names is the Mazda Miata in the United States and, for a time, Canada.

Regardless of its various names, it has remained the best-selling roadster in the world since 2015.

Competition for the MX-5 has typically come from other Japanese coupes. The most notable of these are the Toyota GR86 (or GT86 depending on where it is sold) and the Subaru BRZ. The Fiat 124 Spider also comes into consideration sometimes.

Mazda has typically offered the 2-door roadster in three trim levels. These are the base Sport, Club, and Grand Touring.

Powertrains for the MX-5 have typically ranged between a 1.5 L inline-4 through to a 2.0 L inline-4. These are the configurations found in the latest generation.

Each of these engines is offered with various manual or automatic transmissions, regardless of trim level. These were updated to both be 6-speed gearboxes with the latest generation.

The model has received huge critical acclaim and praise over the years. These include awards like Car of the Year Japan Award in both 2005 and 2015.

It later received true recognition when it won the 2016 World Car of the Year award, as well as the 2016 World Car Design of the Year.
