The Nissan Xterra was a compact SUV available between 1999 though to 2015 when it was replaced by several lines.

To replace the Xterra Nissan diverted potential customers to the Rogue, Murano and the Terra line for Chinese buyers.

Two generations of the SUV were built and sold around the world and during its lifespan, the car was granted many awards by motoring publications.

Many motoring organizations awarded the car their "SUV of the year" and even "car of the year" titles including AAA and Edmunds.com.

As consumer tastes changed away from heavy off-road-capable SUV's to crossover SUV's that boasted lower running costs sales of the Xterra plunged.

The second-generation model released in 2005 had only one choice of engine for buyers, a 4 litre V6 mated to either a 5-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission.

This move to a lack of options for customers was another nail in the coffin for the Xterra SUV as it gave no option for customers who wanted a low-emissions and low-cost SUV.

Things didn't get off to a good start for the model either back in the 1990s as one motoring publication described it as a cheap knock-off of the Land Rover Discovery.
