Built on the platform used by the 208 superminis, the Peugeot 2008 is taller and so is classed as a subcompact crossover SUV.
It has a lot of the benefits of an SUV style car including the easier access and interior storage space but with the benefits of a normal car such as low running costs.
Introduced in the 2013 model year the car replaced the 207 SW station wagon, a style of car that was quickly falling out of fashion.
Engines ranged from a 1.2-liter gasoline through to a 1.6-liter turbo-diesel mated to a 5/6 speed manual or a 4/6 speed automatic gearbox.
Like the rest of the range around this time, the second generation 2008 model released in 2019 sported a much different range of engines.
Engine displacement options were lower but with more turbo-charged variations that help the car sell in emerging markets like China.
New transmissions also helped get the most out of the power from the engine and included a CVT for the first time.
Sales were impressive for 2008 from the start and continued year-on-year in Europe with China faltering most likely due to increased competition.
Many other subcompact crossover SUVs came onto the market including the Honda HR-V and Subaru Crosstrek who have both strengthened their offering.
