The Megane first entered the market back in 1995 and has remained a staple of the Renault family ever since.

Since that time, there have been a total of four generations. The latest of these arrived in 2016. With a new generation coming roughly every six years, it is likely a new model will make its debut in 2024.

It is worth noting that the third generation, which was released in 2008, represented a huge update in terms of the styling of the model.

This is when the Megane became what most people think of now. This is also when the RS model was introduced.

The small family car has usually been offered in six trim levels. For the latest generation, these include the Expression+, Dynamique Nav, Dynamique S Nav, Signature Nav, GT-Line Nav, and finally GT Nav.

The Megane has faced competition from other popular cars in the segment. These include the Peugeot 308, Skoda Octavia, and the hugely successful Ford Focus.

Renault has offered the model in both petrol and diesel powertrains. Petrol versions have typically ranged between a 1.0 L inline-3 and the 2.0 L inline-4 found in high-performance models like the RS.

A plug-in hybrid powertrain was also introduced with the latest generation.

These have been mated with various transmissions, including manual, automatic, and CVT options. Most of these feature either a 5-speed or a 6-speed gearbox.

In 2021, Renault unveiled the Megane E-Tech. This is essentially a fully-electric crossover version. This is likely the direction that the model will take in the near future, given the popularity of both EVs and crossover SUVs.
