The Baleno first made its debut in 1995. The nameplate was then discontinued for a time with the introduction of the Suzuki Aerio in 2001.

The modern version of the Baleno was brought back to the various markets as a subcompact in 2015. Since that time, there have been only two generations to hit the various markets.

This latest iteration has boasted two generations to hit the various markets. It has also been sold under different brands, depending on the market. These include the Toyota Glanza and Starlet in India and Africa respectively. These were released in 2019, along with a model refresh.

It is often considered to be the bigger sibling to the Suzuki Swift. Competition from rival offerings include the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, and Hyundai i30.

Trim levels vary based on the region in which the Baleno is sold. The most notable of these are the two trim levels in the United Kingdom, the SZ-T and SZ5.

Other markets typically received the GL and GLX trim options. These regions consist of Australia, South America, and Africa.

Powertrains include petrol, hybrid, and diesel options. Petrol engines range from a turbocharged 1.0 L Boosterjet inline-3 up to a 1.4 L inline-4. There is only a turbocharged 1.25 L Fiat inline-4 engine available for diesel options.

The MHEV variants are powered by either a 1.2 L or a 1.25 L Dualjet inline-4 mild hybrid technology. These are coupled with the 12-Volt Mild Hybrid Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki system.

There are several different transmissions depending on the engine selection. All of these are offered with a 5-speed manual as standard, while some versions have a 4-speed and a 6-speed automatic option available. There is also a CVT version.
