After the disappointing performance of the VW CC (Passat CC), the model was replaced with the stylish Volkswagen Arteon. It’s marketed as a mid-size family sedan car available either as a liftback or as a 5-door wagon. It was first unveiled back in 2017 at the Geneva Motor Show, as well as at the Chicago Auto Show for the US market.

While being the literal successor to the CC, Volkswagen has been keen to point out that the Arteon represents a step up in terms of luxury and position in the overall VW range. It is built on the MQB platform, and also shares a connection with its corporate cousin, the Skoda Superb.

From 2017 to 2020, the Arteon was only available as a sedan, but as part of the 2020 facelift, the range was augmented with a new “shooting brake” body style (wagon). A plug-in hybrid powertrain was also introduced, as well as the “R” variant on the range, which some argue constitutes a standalone model due to its premium nature.

One can characterize the VW Arteon best with its elongated, sleek exterior with bold body lines and coupe-like rear roof. It’s this area in which the DNA of the older VW CC can really be seen most clearly. The front end combines both bold and elegant elements. The 2020 facelift brought a new grille design, as well as a new design for the front air intakes.

Interestingly, the Arteon does very well in the Chinese market, where it has retained its CC badge. All models get a powertrain with either a 1.5-liter/2-liter gasoline, 1.4-liter e-Hybrid, or 2-liter turbo diesel engine. These are all paired with Volkswagen’s 6- or 7-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG, a dual-clutch system), apart from the 2019 2.0 TSI variant, which is paired with an 8-speed AWF8F35 unit.
