Beginning its life back in the early 1970s the Passat line of family cars from Volkswagen has gone from a basic entry-level model to a sought-after household name.
Underneath the car was the same platform the German company had used on the Audi 80.
It wasn't until 1988 when the company built its own platform for the car tailoring it to the needs of the type of customer that bought the car.
In 1996 the styling of the Passat seriously improved and underneath was now a common chassis shared among other models from the carmaker such as the Golf, Bora and the Polo.
During the following redesigns, the car went from strength to strength in terms of safety, styling and reliability.
Several offshoots came from the Passat line including the CC variation that was styled with a sloping roof and possessed better technology than the standard model.
Another notable variation of the car was the Alltrack which featured tougher body panels and higher ground clearance - it competed against similar models such as the XC70 and Subaru Outback.
For different markets around the world, the Passat has been adapted to help it sell and also goes by the names: Dasher, Quantum, Santana, Corsar, Magotan, Carat.
