The Jaguar X-Type first made its debut in 2001. During its near-decade on the market, only a single generation was released. The model was later discontinued in 2009.

Despite boasting only a single generation, the model did receive a facelift in 2007. It was also sold in two body styles, the first being the 4-door sedan and the second being a 5-door estate wagon.

Because Jaguar was owned by Ford during this time, the X-Type shared various similarities with the second generation of the Ford Mondeo, which debuted in 2000. It also shares the same platform with the Land Rover Freelander.

Like many Jaguar models, rivals come from the luxury German offerings like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Jaguar offered only three trim levels for the X-Type. These were the base, SE, and Sport. The latter two of which featured more classical and performance styling respectively.

Powertrains included the choice of three petrol and two diesel options. The petrol versions range from the smallest engine, a 2.1 L V6, up to a 3.0 L V6. The two diesel engines were a 2.0 L inline-4 and a 2.2 L inline-4. Both diesel options were turbocharged.

Transmission options consisted of various gearboxes. These included 5-speed and 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes.

The model’s discontinuation came as a result of poor sales. Jaguar originally expected sales of roughly 100,000 units per year. Yet, it only sold about 350,000 units over its entire eight-year run, falling short by nearly half a million units.

Jaguar later released the XE in 2014. This was deemed the successor to the X-Type.
