First seen at the Paris motor show, the Doblo was sold as a leisure activity vehicle, or, perhaps more commonly known a ‘panel van’ (much like the Citroen Berlingo or the Peugeot Rifter).

Sales in Holland proved great and by 2006, the Doblo won ‘international van of the year’ in a poll participated in by 19 countries.

Capable of carrying 730 kg (or 0.7 tons), the Doblo was built at Fiats Tofas subsidiary factory in Bursa, Turkey.

Sold in countries such as Russia, Vietnam and Brazil, there were three battery electric versions offered as part of Fiat’s ‘go green’ initiative. One of these batteries was a lithium-ion NanoSafe and could reach a full charge after just 10 minutes. Another was a 43 kWh lead acid battery with a range of 150 km after a lengthy charge of 5 plus hours.

Second generations went on sale in 2010, again built at the Tofas plant.

Built upon the Fiat small platform, shared with a number of vehicles like the Grande Punto, a pickup variant was added to the range, again electric, it was the first commercial electric vehicle to be used for commercial purposes in Turkey.

The Hanover Motor Show saw the first facelift of these vans with changes made to the front grille and the front end. A number of trims became available, including standard, Active, SX, Technico, Pop, Easy, Large and Trekking.

With an overall score from Euro NCAP of 3 out of 5, Fiat pulled the Doblo out of the UK in 2019, naming its successor the N1 Fiat van.
