The name Puma refers to two different models created by Ford, a pports compact, and a crossover SUV. The sports compact was manufactured between the years 1997 – 2002. It was a small, three-door vehicle that had iconic and arguably futuristic styling for the late 1990s.
During its 5 years of manufacture, the Cologne factory in Germany produced it exclusively. The Ford Puma Crossover (or sport utility vehicle, SUV) resurrected the brand in 2019 with a completely new aesthetic. It perhaps had more in common with the 7th generation Ford Fiesta than with its predecessor. Ford was very specific with its vision, marketing and selling exclusively to the Australasian and European markets.
All Pumas have featured front-engine layouts and have had front-wheel drive capability with just four seats. Other typical traits are the 15-inch wheels, which were taken almost directly from the Mark 4 Fiesta and surprisingly, the engines were produced in later years alongside Yamaha, ensuring costs were kept as low as possible and that the car had as broad as an appeal as possible.
The small 3-door Puma had 4 engine types, 1.4-litre, 1.6-litre, 1.7-litre and the Tickford tuned 1.7-litre VCT. The latter was used predominantly for rally racing in which it faired quite well. In these short 5 years, 133,000 Pumas were built.
The second version (the crossover) was announced at the ‘Go Further’ show in Amsterdam alongside the 3rd generation Kuga. The 2019 models were first produced in Croatia, Romania and featured engines such as the belt-driven, hybrid 1.0-litre Ecoboost 3 cylinder turbo gasoline. What makes the cross-over appealing to families is its NCAP 5-star safety rating, scoring highly in protection for passengers and pedestrians alike. In 2021, the Puma beat the Fiesta for most Ford's sold in the UK.’ Overall it's the 8th best-selling car in the UK.
