The S2000 first made its debut in 1999. It remained on the market for just a decade, until its discontinuation in 2009.

During its time on the market, only two generations were manufactured. The second and final of these was unveiled in 2004. These generations were called AP1 and AP2 respectively.

Various special editions were released in the second generation. For the United States, this was the Club Racer, which came in 2008. This version was called the Type S for the Japanese market.

Europe received a GT trim level in 2002. This was later updated with the release of the special editions called the Ultimate Edition and GT Edition 100 in 2009.

The 2-door roadsters often faced competition from other Japanese models in the class. The most notable of these include the Mazda Miata, Toyota GT86, and Subaru BRZ.

Both generations of the Honda S2000 were fitted with only a single-engine option. For the first generation, this was a 2.0 L inline-4. This was used again for the second iteration, but the North American models were updated to feature a 2.2 L inline-4.

These engines were mated with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The model did receive a number of awards and critical acclaim. Upon its release, it won 1999 Cabrio of the Year. Another notable win for the model was being awarded the title of “Best Affordable Sports Car” in both 2008 and 2009 by the US News & World Report.

While the model was discontinued in 2009, there were plans for a successor. This is most probably because of decent sales and fairly good critical acclaim. However, this never came to pass due to the automotive industry crisis.
