The first Genesis made its debut under the Hyundai brand in 2008. Two generations were released in this form, with the second coming in 2013.

Hyundai then decided to start the Genesis luxury subdivision in 2015.

Then in 2016, the third generation of the Genesis G80 made its debut under the new brand. This is when the G80 name first emerged.

Since the release of the new name, an additional generation was released in 2020, marking the fourth generation in all.

Competition for the model has typically come from a number of luxury sedan offerings. The most notable of these include the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and BMW 5 Series.

Trim levels for the G80 are based on the engine chosen. These options include the base model and the Sport. From there, both options have the additional Advanced and Prestige packages.

The engines for these models have varied over the years, but have steadily gotten smaller. Under the Genesis brand, these powertrains have consisted of petrol engines between a 2.0 L inline-4 and a 5.0 L V8.

There has typically been only a single diesel option for each generation. These have traditionally been a 2.2 L inline-4.

These engines have been coupled with either an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Adding to the G80 series, Genesis released the Electrified G80 in 2021. This is one of the first fully-electric models to be released by the luxury Korean brand.

The EV variant is offered only in dual-motor AWD. This is done through the use of a combined 262 kW that is powered by a 87.2 kWh battery.
